Patchwhore by Kim Jones **RELEASE DAY!!** and REVIEW

I’M THAT GIRL…
The girl who thought she was living her happily ever after.
The one who fell for the lies.
A victim of infidelity.

After months of heartache and loss, anger ensued.
Rage replaced sadness. Fury took over heartache. Revenge became irresistible.
Now he’ll feel what I felt. One by one, his brothers will take his place in my bed.
They have a name for me in the MC world…

PATCHWHORE.

And this is my story.

If making her ex jealous is what she wants, Devil’s Renegades Prospect Cook is more than willing to oblige. He only has one rule: He doesn’t share.
She can seek her revenge. Follow through with her plan. But her body will be his. He’ll own her fantasies. And her pleasure. But in her eyes, he’s just a lowly PROSPECT—nothing more.
Little does she know, she’s about to be enlightened.

Note: This is a full-length standalone Devil's Renegade Motorcycle Club novel. Due to strong language and sexual content, this book is not intended for readers under the age of 18.

MY RATING: 4 1/2 Stars

REVIEW:

First, let me just say, in case you missed it in the blurb above, that this is a standalone novel. It is part of the Devil's Renegades series but can easily be read without having read  the others. That said, if you haven't read the others in the  series....WHAT ARE  YOU WAITING FOR?! Seriously, it's one  of my favorite  ever series. Get  on that. Moving on....if you have read the other books, you will recognize a couple of the characters. Particularly our hot male lead, Cook, who made himself well known  in Clubwhore.

Now, Cook.....holy hell, Cook. That man is hot! He barely registered on my meter in Clubwhore because I was focused on other characters but oh boy, he sure has been brought to the forefront now! He may make my list of favorite book boyfriends now, right alongside Luke Carmical from Kim's Saving Dallas. I'll get back to Cook in a second though.

Now, I want to talk about Carmen. I loved this girl. She was hilarious and spunky. I loved her plan for  revenge against her ex that broke her heart. Especially given  how much it goes against how she was raised.  It takes some serious chutzpah to pull off what she wanted to do! I love how, in the end, all she really has to be is herself to get  her revenge.

Cook.  Oh my Cook. This man is hot in all the right ways. Dominant but not domineering. He respects her need for independence and her need to do what she needs to do for revenge. He's determined to right the wrongs he's committed in his own life, showing his own character. He gives Carmen his protection, even though most of the time she doesn't even realize that he's doing it. He's always on the periphery, taking it all in, watching everything going on and if you're on his radar in any capacity, he will probably end up knowing more about you than you know about yourself. Not to mention that the man is ripped and hot as sin.

The only thing that kind of bugged me is that one of the conflicts that built up throughout the book was glossed over with barely a blink. I don't want to give anything away so I'll just say that it has to do with Cook's status. I also would have liked to see the ex get a little more of his due than just being pissed off here and there. The damage in Cook's past is also glossed over without really being part of the story, other than to explain why Cook is in an MC. All in all, the conflict seemed somewhat lacking in this book. I absolutely adored the Cook and Carmen though, so I didn't really care!

I  already want to read this book again and revisit these characters. It was a fun book without much  of the crazy intensity that usually accompanies an MC book but still with a lot of the fun perks of them. Motorcycles, hot guys, colorful characters, crazy drinking nights, and lots of hot *ahem* .....it's all there!

Excerpt
“What the hell is so funny?” I lick up the column of her exposed throat.

“The look on your face.”

“Glad to amuse you, babe, but you won’t think it’s quite so funny when I punish you for your little stunt.”

“Whatever you say. It was innocent.”

“Innocent? You’re in a bar in a strange city, with some of the craziest girls in the world, looking like a fucking sex kitten, and you call that innocent?”

“You think I look like a sex kitten?” Her voice goes low.

“Absofuckinglutely. Hottest girl in this room. The hair, the body, the outfit... Every guy in here, with the exception of our friends, wants to fuck you. Lucky for me, that’s my job. And when I get you alone, that’s exactly what I’m going to do.”

Her eyes grow hazy with lust, and she licks her lower lip. “Can you tell me more about this punishment?”

I move her to a dark corner and pin her against the wall. “Stop looking at me like that, Ember. I’m not above fucking you against the bathroom wall.”

“Ummm, sounds like fun. What else.” She taunts me, and I grow hard against her pelvis.

“You like that? You want me to talk dirty and tell you I want to eat your fucking pussy until you beg for mercy for leaving me tonight? Make you come silently against my mouth, fingers, and dick while we’re in a house full of people?”

“Yes, I want that. I want you any and every way I can get you.”

Review

This book is book three of the Surrendering series. It can be read as a stand alone, however, I would definitely recommend reading the other books in the series because the characters are recurring and I think it would be more enjoyable to the reader to know them better.

I loved the secondary characters in this book. Ember's Aunt Chloe is a total trip and I just wanted to hug her cousin, Cruz. Oh, and Cruz's boyfriend, Alex? Yeah, they are both yummy. They are gay, over protective, alpha male big brother figures to Ember and I loved them to death. I want them to be my big brothers so we can all watch chick flicks together and be snarky together.

Ember's childhood is heartbreaking and causes her to be very shy, withdrawn and insecure. Robbie, an ex-marine, helps bring her out of her shell and show her how to not be afraid to be herself. He's understanding about her insecurities while still being the typical alpha ex-military over-protective sexy male. The sexual attraction between these two is intense and the sex scenes are steamy hot!

Without giving too much away, there are other characters from Ember's past that show up whose ass I wanted to kick. Of course problems ensue and then I briefly wanted to kick Robbie's ass too at one point. There is a HEA though and no cliffhangers so definitely read this one, you won't regret it!

Making Faces by Amy Harmon

Rating: 5 Stars

Title: Making Faces

Author:  Amy Harmon

Publisher: CreateSpace Independent Publishing Platform

Genre:  Contemporary Romance

Length: 320 Pages

Summary :

Ambrose Young was beautiful. He was tall and muscular, with hair that touched his shoulders and eyes that burned right through you. The kind of beautiful that graced the covers of romance novels, and Fern Taylor would know. She'd been reading them since she was thirteen. But maybe because he was so beautiful he was never someone Fern thought she could have...until he wasn't beautiful anymore. Making Faces is the story of a small town where five young men go off to war, and only one comes back. It is the story of loss. Collective loss, individual loss, loss of beauty, loss of life, loss of identity. It is the tale of one girl's love for a broken boy and a wounded warrior's love for an unremarkable girl. This is a story of friendship that overcomes heartache, heroism that defies the common definitions, and a modern tale of Beauty and the Beast, where we discover that there is a little beauty and a little beast in all of us.

Review

I just finished this book and I LOVED IT! If I'm being honest, I had read a couple of the reviews, which I don't normally do, and they were complaining about the religious aspect of the book being shoved down their throats. I'm not really a religious person so I was a little worried about whether or not I would like it. I didn't feel like this book was like that at all. I mean, sure, there was a few mentions here and there but Fern's father is a pastor, so it wasn't like it was out of left field or anything. That said, it wasn't done in an in your face type of way at all. I wouldn't qualify this as a Christian book or a spiritual/religious book.

This isn't the typical romance that I'm used to reading these days, where boy meets girl, they fall madly in love and then fight the rest of the book to stay together. Or even fight to stay away from each other. This one follows a boy and a girl through some of their high school and post high school years as they learn what life is about and some valuable lessons along the way. This book is about more than the love story. It's about a small town and the people that live there. It's about friends and stereotypes and relationships. It's about self-image, expectations and overcoming. It's about life and how it isn't always perfect, it is in fact, sometimes downright awful, but you persevere and you do what you have to do to live the life you want. It's about the journey.

I think that overall, Ambrose grew more as a character. Fern and Bailey were both fairly well-adjusted characters that knew who they were. I think Fern had some growing to do yet, even at the end. I do think she had started her journey towards the end but I got the feeling that she would get there. There is an explanation for this in the book though, that makes total sense.
I love the poem that Fern writes. It is so fitting for her, for Ambrose and for Bailey. Oh and I adored Bailey. His attitude and outlook about life despite his limitations is so inspiring and, frankly, typical of a lot of people that I've known that had life altering limitations.

Tissue warning!! Have a box handy. That's all I'm gonna say.

This is a book that will stay with me and will absolutely be a keeper for me. It's one I will come back to and re-read. And I get to see Ms. Harmon at the Cleveland book signing next weekend....can't wait to get this one signed!

Review

I decided to read this as part of my Popsugar 2015 Reading Challenge for the category of "a book a friend recommended" (thanks Kali!).

This was my first MC (Motorcycle Club) book! I wasn't really sure what to expect. My only experience with this type of thing came from the three or four episodes of Sons of Anarchy that I've seen. Surprisingly, I really liked the show (who doesn't love watching Charlie Hunnam?), but there are certain aspects of this lifestyle that I don't like so I was a little apprehensive about reading an MC book. I loved it! Those things were still present in the book, but it wasn't 'in your face' and most of it didn't revolve around the main characters, so it didn't bother me.

This book was HOT! Hot and steamy and sexy! It's well written with great characters that are believable, likable and well developed. The relationships grew from the beginning to the end. The two main characters, as individuals, grew from the beginning to the end. The book was paced well  and gave you some insight in to the life of a motorcycle club.

I have this quirk. When I hear different men's names, I tend to think of them in bed with a woman calling out their names. Don't laugh! I think it's my way of deciding if it's a sexy name or not. So that said, I had difficulty with the name Horse. I'm cracking up as I'm writing this because I know that somebody, somewhere is dying laughing while reading this, but come on! I thought they story of why that was his name was comical and I get that they all have street names in the club but every time she called him Horse or it would say that she called his name while in the throes it just made me giggle. That was truly my only issue with this book and it's just a personal quirk of mine.

I loved Marie. I loved how she had the strength to remove herself from a bad situation. I loved her loyalty, to both her mom and her brother and eventually to Horse and the club. She comes across as this relatively quiet girl but she has some spirit and can be feisty when she needed to be. I really liked her relationship with her brother in the beginning, how she was able to see past his flaws and just see her brother and how he was always there for her.

Horse grows on you. He's pretty rough around the edges at first but he's a good guy. He knows what he wants and he's determined to get it. He's protective of those he cares about and by the end you see the softer side of him. And who doesn't love the bad boy? I know I do!

If you haven't checked out this series yet (like me!) then you are missing out and should definitely check it out. It is worth the read. Might want to have your significant other handy while you're reading it though.

Review

**We did a buddy read in my book club where we were paired up with another member and chose a book for each other. This is the book that was chosen for me by my buddy. It was a fun experience and I hope we do it again at some point! It's fun to be introduced to new books and/or authors and see what other friends are reading and what they like. I hope she likes the one I picked for her!**

Now on to the review....

This is a hard book to review without giving too much away. I think I did okay and this shouldn't need a spoiler warning. Proceed at your own risk though.

I went into this a little blind. I read the blurb but didn't read any of the reviews (still haven't) and thought okay, this sounds interesting! Then the prologue completely threw me because it sounded like it was going to go in a completely different direction than I was anticipating from the blurb. And, boy did it!

The book was really good. A few wrong words here and there that became a little annoying. And she screwed up the names in the middle of the book and left it that way for the rest of the book. It was just a middle name, so it shouldn't have been a big deal, and wouldn't have been if she didn't keep having people address the hero with his first and middle names. Once it was changed, it did stay consistent though, it didn't keep changing back and forth. She also used the "c" word, which is probably the one word that I hate the most but she only used it once. I'm no prude, I just don't like that word, personally, and it jars me out of the action when I see it. *Editing to also add: Aurora has only had one sexual partner - her husband, who was also her high school sweetheart. She was very unsure of herself, seemed to have low self esteem and maybe even a little shy...this just didn't seem like the kind of word she would use.

I liked Aurora, she was likable and fun, and her little boy was cute. The difficulties between Aurora and her ex-husband were believable as were the issues that Aurora had because of it.

The suspense built. I suspected everybody...and I did manage to figure out part of it. I'm usually pretty good about figuring things out ahead of time. Then came the end with a HUGE TWIST that I didn't see coming and I gotta say, I was ready to strangle the author! The author's first words after the end of the book were literally "Ok. I know. Ya'll hate me right now." Seriously! I was pissed!

That said, it is a good book and worth reading. It has a good message about being careful about internet dating, likable characters, interesting plot and is paced well. She wrote the little kids very well, which some authors can't pull off. There will be a sequel but it doesn't have what I really considered a cliffhanger.

There's also a teaser chapter of the sequel at the end, so you get a little peek, although it hasn't been released yet. I haven't decided yet if I want to read it or not.

If you read it, come back and let me know what you think!

Blind Sight (Through the Eyes of Leocardo Reyes) Excerpt

Blind Sight Through the Eyes of Leocardo Reyes by Ermisenda Alvarez

Blind Sight is an urban fantasy about a blind girl who suddenly develops the ability to draw. Told in two different novels, Ermisenda tells the story through the eyes of the blind girl's brother, Leocardo. He thinks Odette is having premonitions. The other volume written by Eliabeth, tells the story through the eyes of Odette's best friend Aniela, who thinks Odette is a medium channeling voiceless spirits.

This is the prologue to Blind Sight Through the Eyes of Leocardo Reyes.

Blind Sight Through the Eyes of Leocardo Reyes

by Ermisenda Alvarez

Something was wrong. Leocardo’s blind, sixteen-year-old sister Odette was drawing. She stood next to the fridge and scribbled feverishly on a piece of paper.

“Odette?” he walked over, certain his eyes deceived him. He quickened his pace when she didn’t respond. “Odette what are you doing?”

Something was wrong with her eyes; her pupils were huge, and they engulfed her usual chestnut color.

“Odette, stop.”

He tried to pull her arm, but like a cat that didn’t want to be picked up, she seemed to become instantly heavier. The pen continued to run across the page as her silence persisted. He frowned, growing angry.

“Odette!” She did not flinch.

He glanced down at the paper and realized her scribble was actually an image. Trees and mountains framed a large lake on the paper and Leocardo was frozen in confusion. How was she drawing? The pen fell onto the paper as Odette collapsed into Leocardo’s arms.

Twisting her around to face him, he demanded, “What were you doing? Answer me!”

Her limp body shook in his arms; her eyes closed and she was barely audible as if on the brink of passing out. “I don’t feel good,” she murmured weakly. Even though she was naturally petite and fragile, now she looked like she was about to shatter. “I want to sleep.”

The warm brown crept back into her unfocused eyes and her pupils normalized.

“Odette,” he started again, but her trembling became more violent so he stopped. “Okay.” He scooped her up in his arms and carried her to her room. As soon as she hit the sheets, the trembling stopped and almost as quickly, snoring followed.

Leocardo wanted to wake her up so he could question her, but he wasn't sure if she would have any answers. He couldn’t help but wonder if this had happened to her before. He stormed back to the kitchen, picked up the paper, and examined the drawing. The sun’s rays tore through the clouds, and Odette had even added glimmer to the lake’s rippled surface. Odette had been blind since birth; so how could she have drawn this so perfectly? If he hadn’t seen her doing it, he never would have believed it.

Leocardo slouched into the leather couch, still holding the paper. He felt a throbbing pain behind his eyes. Staring at the drawing, he tried to glean some divine understanding of what it meant or how she had done it. His black labrador, Cielo, had abandoned him to sit outside Odette’s bedroom. He was stunned; he knew he shouldn't have been angry with her, but he had been scared and confused.

An hour passed; he was no more enlightened. He looked up to find Odette standing in the open doorway to her room. He kept silent, but his gaze followed her. She seemed better, no longer moving with the mechanical gestures she had used when she was drawing. Cielo’s nails clicked on the hardwood floor as she followed Odette’s every move.

With disbelief, he watched as Odette began to prepare some sandwiches. “Odette,” he called softly, not wanting to startle her.

“Yeah?”

Leocardo hesitated; why was she acting like nothing happened? “What happened to you before?”

She shrugged, “I guess I had low blood sugar. It was just a headache.”

“What do you remember?” he pried. How could she not remember?

“I had a headache. I went to the fridge. I got dizzy for a second. You caught me.” She paused. “How’d you get from the couch to the fridge that fast?” she asked, as though he was the one who did something strange.

“What?” Irate, he marched over. “Don’t you remember drawing this?” He flapped the page so she could hear it rustle. “What are you trying to pull? This isn’t a game.” He was losing his already short patience. Something could be seriously wrong and she was being evasive.

Her brow pressed together and her lips thinned as she let out a frustrated huff. She spoke slowly, as if concerned he was losing his mind. “Leo…you know I can’t draw, much less see whatever it is you might be holding.”

“I know you can’t,” he said a little defensively. Why was she questioning him when she should be providing answers? “You got up and went to the fridge before you started to draw this. I’m not making this up. I have the drawing right here in my hand!” He restrained himself, shaking the paper again, as if hearing the sound made his story more believable.

Odette’s calm expression indicated that she was not amused.

“How can you not remember?” he asked angrily.

He sighed and dropped the drawing onto the floor. His fingers ran through his hair as he tried to make sense of everything without flying off the handle.

“I’m sorry,” Odette murmured, “but I don’t know what you’re talking about.”

“It’s okay…sorry,” The moment was awkward and disjointed; he was unsure what to do. Odette went back to making the sandwich, and Leocardo returned to the sofa. He snatched the remote and flipped between channels until he settled on the news.

Tragedies flashed on the screen as Leocardo watched, desperate for a distraction. Something wasn’t adding up, cognitive dissonance, ironic that something he was learning in school was relevant to his life for a change. Maybe he imagined it all. Maybe the lack of sleep was getting to him and he had drawn it. Television bored him, but he didn’t know what else to do. The news changed topics, now featuring Alaska and its trading partners.

“Edaion,” Leocardo repeated one of the countries listed. A sudden and overwhelming desire to visit this island nation overtook him.

Odette came over and sat next to him, her unfocused eyes in the direction of the screen. Leocardo leaned forward as if being pulled into the screen. He was mesmerized. Slowly he felt his eyelids droop.

“Edaion,” Odette whispered. A silence fell over them and a supernatural film began to wrap around them. Invisible to all, it pressed down on them. Cocooned in this new state, he continued to stare in a trance at the screen. Unable to understand why, he had never wanted anything in his life as much as he wanted to travel to Edaion.

When he tried to stand, he felt an immense pressure upon his shoulders, face, and chest. He reached out to Odette, feeling as though he was falling through the sofa itself. Cielo whined and nuzzled his knee. His grip around Odette’s hand tightened. Suddenly the pressure snapped and he felt the painful sensation of being rammed from all sides, as if hit by a train.

In a dreamlike state, he stumbled forward with Odette sandwiched between him and Cielo. They were somewhere else, no longer in the cozy Barcelona apartment. The air was clean and chilly. A stranger’s arm brushed up against him as a group huddled together, all looking lost and confused. Half a dozen dogs circled and sniffed them. While trying to restore his equilibrium, he noticed the dogs wouldn’t leave Odette alone. They sniffed and licked her palms causing her to wipe them on his shirt. Someone asked him if he was okay, but he didn't answer. The speaker herded the group onto a bus, and as soon as he was seated, Leocardo’s head fell against the windowsill. Blackness engulfed his vision.

The bus lurched and Leocardo was propelled into the seat in front of him. His eyes flew open; his throat felt dry and his nose was pink from the cold. Someone held a colored version of Odette’s drawing before his eyes. It was blurry, and as he reached out, his fingers hit glass. With his sleeve, he wiped the window to see the drawing become clear. Something was wrong.

Why was it behind glass? Where was he? Why was he on a bus? His gaze darted back to Odette who had Cielo nuzzling her affectionately. Her eyes were closed. He woke her up with a shake of the shoulders.

“What is this?” Leocardo demanded as if she would know.

“What’s what? You’re the one who can see, remember?” Her voice was soft and timid. He realized she was just as confused. He wrapped his arm around her and pulled her close and then placed a soft kiss on her forehead.

His gaze returned to the window. It was still there. As the bus meandered through perilous mountains, he never lost sight of the lake. It was glistening, majestic and overwhelming in size, but it was not a drawing. This time he knew it was real. Something was terribly wrong.

Review:

I've been reading this book off and on for the past couple of weeks, and sadly, I'm not finished with it yet. It's been off and on only because I was on vacation (at the beach!) and then catching up from work, otherwise I would be done with it by now. I'm going to write a review up to the point I've reached. It's not something I normally do, but since I agreed to be part of this blog tour, I wanted to get a review up ...even though the authors were fantastic about me going on vacation and said I could just post an excerpt. So, on to the review....

The format for this book is different and not something I've seen for a long time. Two books. Both titled the same. Each told from the perspective of a different character. Each written by a different author. I remember reading books as a kid where you would read one side, then flip it over and read the other side. While I haven't had a physical copy in my hands, this concept sort of reminds me of that. I was intrigued and excited about the whole idea! As a writer, I cannot imagine how incredibly difficult writing like this would be. You would have to know your writing partner very well to pull this off.

I let the authors choose which side to give me, and I received Leocardo's side. The other side is from Aniela's (aka Ana) perspective. You get lots of exposure to Ana throughout Leo's side and I can only imagine that the same is true for Ana's side. At this point, I can't speak as to whether or not they are stand alone reads, but why cheat yourself, anyway? It's also interesting that one perspective is from an outsider and the other is from a native.

I found the beginning slightly confusing. The story seemed to jump ahead a bit, without much explanation as to what happened. Some of it comes back later in flashbacks that Leo has. Some of it (so far) has not been explained at all. I understand that it's supposed to be because they don't remember it but it makes it confusing for the reader. If I'm this confused as a reader, how confused would the characters be? And, taking that into consideration, I can't believe how relatively calmly they take everything. Leo does freak out a bit, but not nearly as much as I think I would.

Leo seems to be a well fleshed out character. He is a devoted big brother to Odette and feels an overwhelming responsibility to her. I thought it was rather strange that they lived together at the beginning of the story, rather than Odette living with her parents. Especially considering that she is still in high school and blind. Leo was going to college at the time and I don't know many college guys that would want their blind little sister living with them unless their parents were gone.

I also really like Ana. Even though she is young, she knows who she is and seems to be fairly independent. She will do what she has to do to help Leo and get things done, regardless of the consequences. She is strong, but also vulnerable when it comes to Leo.

Odette, on the other hand, comes across more like a spoiled brat. We don't see a lot of the relationship between Odette and Leo, other than the fact that they live together, but she treats him horribly enough to make me question his devotion to her. Sometimes she seemed sweet and in the blink of an eye I would be wondering if she was bi-polar. I just didn't connect with her at all.

So far, I'm really enjoying this book! I'm about 2/3 of the way through and anxious to see how it ends.  Right now I'm giving it four stars. If that changes when I'm completely finished with it, I will update the review. It's definitely something I would recommend anyone to check out, if only for the fun and unique quality to it. Once they start reading, I'm sure they'll be hooked.

Danger In Deer Ridge by Terry Odell (A Blackthorne, Inc. Novel)

Rating: 4 Stars

Title:  Danger In Deer Ridge

Author:  Terry Odell

Cover Design: Dave Fymbo

Genre:  Contemporary Romance

Length: 319 Pages

Summary :

What do you do when your life turns upside down? Whatever it takes.

When Elizabeth Parker arrives in Deer Ridge with her eight-year-old son, she's constantly looking over her shoulder, afraid her husband won't believe she's dead, despite the new identity provided by the high-end firm of Blackthorne, Inc. Within hours of her arrival, a man shows up claiming he's there to hook up her gas line. When he keeps turning up, she's wary as to his motives. For Elizabeth, trust doesn't come easy. She'll never let her husband lay a hand on her son, no matter what, and if this man is working for her husband, she wants no part of him.

Mark Grinciewicz, Grinch to everyone who knows him, was Blackthorne, Incorporated's top pilot. When his ex-wife dies, he is left with custody of a five-year-old son he hardly knows, and everything changes. Determined to do what it takes to help his son adjust to a new life, Grinch finds himself tethered to the ground, unable to do what he loves—fly.

When he gets a call from Blackthorne, requesting that he take a simple assignment—teach a woman how to fit into the community under her new identity—he reluctantly accepts the task. Bad enough he's not supposed to let on he's aware of her identity, or that he's on her side. But what he doesn't know is that she has something her husband needs, and the man will do just about anything to get it back. Suddenly, everyone is a potential threat. Can Grinch break through her defenses and earn her trust in time to save her without endangering her son or his?

Review:

This is the first book I've read by Terry Odell and I really enjoyed it. Picking one in the Blackthorne, Inc. series was just luck, but I enjoyed this taste of the series enough to check out some others in the series. The plot develops at a good pace, one that's easy to read and keep up with, but also keeps driving the story forward. The characters are also very well developed and grow noticeably throughout the book.

The paranoia that Elizabeth Parker exhibits at the beginning of, and throughout, the book are believable and contagious. The feeling of it travels through the pages, up your arms and punches you in the gut. You get that feeling of paranoia yourself and can feel her fear of her husband finding her and taking her son. Despite the fear, she is determined to try not to let it show to Will, her son, hoping to give him as relatively normal of a childhood as she is capable of. If you've ever been a parent, it is easy to relate to the feelings and fear portrayed throughout the book, especially when certain situations arise.

The relationship that develops between the two boys (Grinch's son and Elizabeth's son) is cute to watch and the dynamics of the relationships with all of the characters is very real. It was also very interesting to have a book about a grounded pilot. It's not often you get one like that - usually it's the hotshot pilots, not one that is giving up what he loves for his son. The decisions that Grinch makes shows a lot about his character in a subtle way.

The imagery used in describing the Colorado mountains is extremely well done. I could just see the little town - just a quaint little, unassuming, country/mountain town - and especially the restaurant they took the boys too. I loved it! It made me want to get the map out and see if this place is real so I could visit.

The heart of the plot comes about when it's discovered that Elizabeth took something with her when she left her husband. If she had left well enough alone, she may have gotten away with hiding from him, but whether it was the human nature of greed, curiosity or, as she claims, an insurance policy, it comes back to bite her in the end. With the tension reaching new heights by the end of the book, it culminates in a nail biting situation that kept me reading well past bed time.

The romance that develops between Elizabeth and Grinch was relatable to anybody that has been hurt in a relationship before. It was slow to develop, showing them dealing with both of their feelings of fear and vulnerability. Because of that, it comes across as a much more real, and enduring, relationship. It can be hard to do this in the span of a book and still keep the plot moving forward, but Ms. Odell does an admirable job.

Whether you are a fan of Terry Odell's, a fan of the Blackthorne, Inc. series or are just finding this one, it is definitely one worth checking out. It kept me on the edge of my seat with suspense and tension and had a satisfying ending that wrapped things up nicely.

Guilty as Charged by Anna James

My Rating: 4 Stars

Title: Guilty as Charged (Book 1 of the Bradford Sisters Trilogy)

Author: Anna James

Publisher: Sugar and Spice Press
Cover Art: Cover art designed by the publisher

Genre: Contemporary Romance

Length: 81 Pages

Summary

Passion ignites between Nicole Bradford and Max Paradis the second they lay eyes on each another. Nicole seems to be everything that Max is looking for in a woman. She’s sweet and loving and incredibly sexy. But looks can be deceiving. Hadn’t he learned that the hard way?

Nicole is crazy for Max. He is sensitive, caring and his kisses are to die for. But when secrets from her past are revealed will she be found innocent or is she guilty as charged?

Review

Another entertaining, quick read from Ms. James. This author definitely likes her white collar men and has a nice knack for making them sexy as well. As I mentioned in a review of another book by this author, white collar men usually aren't my thing, but these guys are very deserving of the "sexy" title. Of course, they also seem to be deserving of the "hot headed" and "stubborn" titles as well, but hey, I like a few flaws with my guys. After all, perfect would be boring, right?

After leaving his brother in charge of the very successful company that he built from the ground up, Max Paradis left the country to escape an ex. Now he's returned, angry, jaded and determined not to let another woman close to him. Until he sees Nicole.

Nicole Bradford has been working for Max's brother, Reed, for over a year and is Reed's "right hand man". Talented, charming and loyal, she has the smarts to help build the company up even more. She raised her sisters after the death of her parents and, even though she is attracted to Max, she doesn't have much free time to date.

Meeting under an amusing, yet somewhat appalling (on Max's part), misunderstanding the trouble just snowballs from there. This story is like a comedy of errors from start to finish, with two adults that are used to being independent and who have been burnt by past relationships. The question becomes whether they can set all their preconceived notions aside and give the relationship a real chance. When the past comes back to haunt Nicole, it could be the beginning of the end of everything she has worked for.

Max is a sexy, take charge kind of guy that is capable of helping her if Nicole would only trust him. In Nicole's defense - Max is also the kind of guy that you want just to slap some sense into once in a while but if you can get past his shell, he is also a softhearted, sweet man that will win you over.

The secondary characters are all also very engaging and it will be fun to see more of the other sisters, and the development of the relationship between Nicole's sister, Natalie, and Max's brother, Reed. As I mentioned in a different review, to not only engage you in the story being told, but to also make several other characters intriguing enough to make you want to learn more about them as well, is a very difficult task to accomplish in a novella. This author did an excellent job and I very much look forward to reading the rest of the trilogy.

Hawthorne by Sarah Ballance

Rating: 5 Stars

Title: Hawthorne

Author: Sarah Ballance

Publisher: Astraea Press
      Cover Art: Elaina Lee

Genre: Contemporary Paranormal Romance

Length: 40 Pages

Summary

After a terrifying encounter with the unexplained, it took ten years and the news of her grandmother’s passing for Emma Grace Hawthorne to return to her childhood home.   She sought peace in saying a proper goodbye, but what she found was an old love, a sordid family history, and a wrong only she could right.

Living in the shadow of Hawthorne Manor, Noah Garrett never forgot about Emma Grace.  In a house full of secrets, his search for missing documents revealed a truth that could cost him everything.  What he found gave Emma the freedom to walk away from the mansion, her heart free and clear, but at what price to Noah?

Review

Considering this is a charity title, I should have gotten to this one so much sooner and for that I apologize both to the author and to those that the charity benefits. Charity information will be at the end of the review.

All that said, I'm kind of glad that this one ended up getting left until now because with Halloween right around the corner this is the perfect time of year to read this one. Hawthorne is full of ghosts, a haunted manor, long buried family secrets and, of course, romance.

Emma Grace is haunted by her past at Hawthorne Manor and the last thing she wants to do is return but when news reaches her of her grandmother's death she is drawn back. Emma needs closure but returning also means seeing her childhood love, Noah, again.

Noah stayed at Hawthorne Manor as an employee, helping Emma Grace's grandmother. He hopes to one day see Emma Grace again, but he's not really very optimistic about that really happening. When she finally returns, all the old feelings come to life between the two of them again.

The beginning is sufficiently creepy and suspenseful enough to immediately grab your attention. The descriptions of the old manor and the landscaping surrounding it are vivid. You can see yourself in the deep south, with the moss hanging from the trees and the air humid enough to almost see. The emotions of the characters are so real that it makes you remember your first love and your first heartbreak. The author does such a good job with the atmosphere that you almost feel like you are in another time, or in a bubble hidden from the rest of the world.

Short length stories like this sometimes leave me feeling like they are incomplete. It's hard to write something that can paint a complete picture, develop characters that people fall in love with and have a satisfying conclusion within such a short amount of pages. I've read many novellas that I really liked but was left feeling like it would have been better as a full length novel with more time to really develop the story/characters. That was so not the case with this one. While I would have loved this one to be longer, just simply to spend more time immersed in this world with these people, I didn't feel cheated at all by the end.

I read this book within an hour or so. Once I started it, I couldn't put it down. I loved these characters and by the end I wasn't sure how to feel. I wanted to cry and smile at the same time. When I finished it, honestly, all I could do was sit there - a little awestruck. These characters and this story will stay with you long after you have turned the last page. Ms. Ballance has earned a new fan. I can't wait to check out more of her work.

Elusive Echoes by Kay Springsteen

My Rating: 5 Stars

Title: Elusive Echoes ( Book 2 of the Orson's Folly Series)

Author: Kay Springsteen

Publisher: Astraea Press
      Cover Art: Elaina Lee

Genre: Contemporary Romance

Length: 238 Pages with a sneak peak at the end of the first in the 'Echoes' series Lifeline Echoes.

Summary:

They’re two people caught between friendship and something more; they can’t move forward, and they can’t let go.

Drawn together from early childhood, Sean McGee and Melanie Mitchell seemed destined for each other. But at age thirteen, Melanie was wrenched from the people she loved and forced onto a path she loathed. Sean was no stranger to people leaving, but losing Melanie devastated him. When she suddenly reappeared in Orson’s Folly, Sean was overjoyed. The Melanie who came home, though, wasn’t the same girl. She’s got a harder edge and she’s obviously hiding something, but Sean no longer knows how to reach her.

Returning to Orson's Folly as an adult, all Melanie wanted to do was forget the years she spent away. But she soon learned that going home didn’t mean she could return to her old life—or her childhood sweetheart, Sean. Even their mutual attraction to one another hasn’t rebuilt the bond of trust and closeness they once shared. It’s been seven years since she returned and now everything Melanie wants to forget has broadsided her. She must confront her demons and relive her past in an unexpected way or risk losing the only man she’s ever loved. But even if she succeeds, Sean might be lost to her anyway.

Review:

Okay, first: have you read Lifeline Echoes? Because if you haven't, go read it. I'll wait.

Are you back? Alrighty, we'll move on with this one then!

Yes, this is another series I fell in love with this summer. I know, I seem to like everything I read, right? But this one is worth its rating, I promise. This is the second book in the series and with it we get to revisit Sandy and Ryan as well as dive headlong into Melanie and Sean's romance.

Sean and Melanie have known each other since they were little kids. Sean called her the "girl with the sunshiny hair" and knew, as he got older, that Melanie was the girl for him. They had a connection that not many people ever get. But then, due to tragic family circumstances, Melanie has to go away and leave Orson's Folly. When she comes back years later as an adult, they still have a connection but Melanie is holding back. On the surface everything seems good but they are having a hard time recovering that connection the deeper level that they used to have it.

The beginning revealed some history that we learned a little about in the first book, giving us a heartbreaking  glimpse into the past. Sean and Melanie are both dynamic characters with a lot of depth to them. Melanie is hiding from a past that she is ashamed of and doesn't want Sean to know about. Because of this she is leery of committing to a permanent relationship. But a permanent relationship is what Sean wants. He's not interested in the idea of anything else with Melanie.

I love what Sean does in this story for his "job". He rehabs horses that have either been physically or emotionally scarred in some way. In other words - horses that nobody else wants, for the most part. Sean works with them and heals them. This reveals a lot about Sean's personality and shows in the way he deals with Melanie. A cowboy with a heart - gotta love him.

I love the character of Melanie. Like Sandy from the first book, she is spunky and sexy yet vulnerable. Don't back her into a corner because she'll give as good as she gets but she also has a soft heart. Ms. Springsteen tends to write strong female characters that can be a partner to the strong male characters she writes rather than submissive to the strong male and I love that. Melanie fits the bill well.

The is one of those stories that pulls you in and keeps a firm hold until you've finished the book. And if that means staying up until 3am? Well, too bad. (Thanks for that, Kay! LOL) But bags under your eyes the next day will be worth it to find out what happens with these two. Can't wait until the next book!

Review

Don't you just love finding a new series that you, well....love? I do. It's like Christmas morning for me. When I find a series that I really enjoy, it goes on the keeper shelf. Then, when I am bored, or feeling nostalgic, or simply missing the new friends I've made in these books, I can just snag one off the shelf and re-visit them. This one is no exception. In the first book of the series, Last Wishes, I fell in love with Gray and Jordan. Getting to re-visit them has been a treat.

In fact, I've never really understood the whole “sexy little schoolgirl” fantasy that men have until I met Gray. Men in suits have never been my thing. To me they just say....soft. I like my men hard-bodied. But Gray? Well, Gray has inspired me to have “sexy men in suits” or “sexy men in black judge's robes” fantasies. That can be just downright disturbing considering how often I visit courthouses for work. Especially when you consider the fact that most judges that I see could (almost) be my dad. Or, at the very least, the creepy perverted uncle at family gatherings. Just eww. Gray is about as far on the opposite end of the spectrum from “eww” as you can get though. Whether he is doing the “I'm on the side of the law, obey me” routine, or the “I'm a sensitive guy, let me run a bath for you” routine, he is H.O.T. And, the scenes between the sheets are sizzling.

Then there is Jordan. I want Jordan to be my new BFF. She is so much fun with such a devil-may-care attitude. I love the fact that she rides a motorcycle and wears red leather. I adore the fact that she got her dog a leather jacket to ride her motorcycle with her. And the fact that she wants nothing to do with the snobby junior league. On the flip side of that, she is open-minded enough to take those junior league snobs and see to the people they are beneath the surface instead of just the picture they present to the world. Jordan is compassionate, caring and there is so much more to her than what she appears to be. The way she gets around Gray's concerns and sometimes overly protective attitude are so similar to how I get around my husband on occasion that I feel as though we could be sisters.

The secondary characters are, as usual, vivid and entertaining. Fireball is still sexy and mysterious. I would love to see more of this guy. Gray's mother is her usual fun self and the kids are adorable. Kiki is just too pinch-her-cheeks cute, making you want to just scoop her up and hug her. The other two, Paul and Emma, are the type of kids that are old beyond their years and make you want to see them have the childhood they deserve. It also wouldn't surprise me to see them on their own adventures on the written page when they are all grown up. The addition of the kids does make me wonder about the future dynamics between all of the characters, most especially (naturally) Gray and Jordan. The mystery is nail-biting with plenty of misdirection and suspense.

I look forward to the next installment in this series (there will be another installment, won't there Ms. Lyons? Pretty please?) with great anticipation. If you enjoy the romantic suspense genre, real characters and great humor, I highly recommend checking this series out. If you haven't yet had the chance to check out Last Wishes, well...what are you waiting for? But, even if you haven't, these books can be read as stand-alone books.
